  • Story: : Soon after leaving Penn State in the summer of 2006 with a dual major of chemistry and commercial management, Eric Bradley headed to Hollywood, Calif. in hopes of pursuing dreams of being a competitive mixed martial artist. The dreams were inspired after a series of conversations with his friend, UFC welterweight contender Josh Koscheck. Like Koscheck, Bradley was a standout amateur wrestler who was a three-time state champion in high school and also a two-time All-American and two-time Big Ten conference champion while in college.

Unlike Koscheck and most standout wrestlers who have crossed over into MMA, Bradley also has amateur experience when it comes to standup fighting. Prior to the 2003 season Bradley was working out at the Olympic training center and as a result of overtraining, he developed two stress fractures in his lower back.

Upon examination, doctors weren’t certain the injury was ever going to heal and Bradley received a medical disqualification preventing him from training and competing in wrestling. Despite having the sport he loved ripped away from him, Bradley didn’t become a regular attendee at keg parties in Happy Valley in order to drown his sorrows.

Bradley’s success in boxing was almost immediate as he would go on to claim the National Collegiate Boxing light heavyweight title in 2003. From there, things took a turn for the better. Bradley’s back healed and he was allowed to resume wrestling in ‘04. Later on he would even be granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA on the basis of a medical hardship.

Bradley’s MMA career began with next to no fanfare at Legends Gym in the heart of Hollywood. Receiving little personal attention and being held back by the stresses of everyday life, Bradley knew in his heart he wasn’t coming close to reaching his full potential. Not to mention he was struggling just to make ends meet. Despite living in an area dominated by plastic surgery, movie stars, Ari Golds, and celebrity rehab, Bradley was living a life that he considered to be near poverty level. He would hustle up money by helping fighters at Legends with their wrestling and taking odd jobs, but it wasn’t cutting it.
